Memoriais Leitura bíblica: Josué 3.17; 4.1-9 _________________ Perpetuarei a tua lembrança por todas as gerações; por isso as nações te louvarão para todo o sempre (Salmos 45.17). _________________

Memoriais e monumentos são bastante apreciados no Brasil. Podem ser vistos em toda parte, desde o Monumento à Independência, no Ipiranga, em São Paulo, passando pela estátua do Cristo Redentor no Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, até as inúmeras placas de bronze celebrando inaugurações de toda espécie e dando nomes a ruas, prédios, salas, etc. Para que servem esses memoriais? Ora, para lembrar quem os vê de algo supostamente importante. Infelizmente, porém, muitas vezes se trata de circunstâncias que fizeram diferença apenas para seus criadores, e os memoriais destinam-se principalmente a preservar a lembrança de personagens que de outro modo talvez fossem insignificantes. O hábito é antigo. A Bíblia relata um caso desses em 1 Samuel 15.12, a respeito do rei Saul (confira!). É grotesco observá-lo glorificando a si mesmo quando Deus o rejeitou. Um monumento assim não passa de um trambolho constrangedor, condenado a poluir a paisagem até acabar derrubado.

A situação é diferente quando erigimos um memorial não para que outros se lembrem de nós, mas para lembrar a nós mesmos de algo importante – e nada é mais importante que a obra de Deus em nossa vida. Foi essa a razão pela qual lemos hoje que os israelitas amontoaram aquelas doze pedras depois de atravessarem o rio Jordão a seco por obra e graça de Deus. Outro exemplo é o dos cristãos quando celebram a Ceia do Senhor conforme ele ensinou e lembram como Jesus os reconciliou com o Pai.

Memorials and monuments are quite appreciated in Brazil. Can be seen everywhere, from the monument to Independence, in Ipiranga, in São Paulo, passing by the statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, to the numerous bronze plates commemorating inaugurations of every kind and giving names to streets, buildings, rooms, etc. What are these memorials? Now, to remember who sees something supposedly important. Unfortunately, however, many times it comes to circumstances that have made a difference only to their creators, and the memorials are intended mainly to preserve the memory of characters that otherwise might be insignificant. The habit is old. The Bible recounts a case of it in 1 Samuel 15.12, the respect of King Saul (check!). It's grotesque to watch him glorifying himself when God rejected him. A monument like this is a clog awkward, doomed to pollute the landscape until overthrown.

The situation is different when erigimos a memorial there for others to remember us, but to remind ourselves of something important – and nothing is more important than the work of God in our lives. Was this the reason we read today that the Israelis thronging those twelve stones after crossing the Jordan River dry work and grace of God. Another example is when Christians celebrate the Lord's Supper as he taught and remember how Jesus reconciled with his father.

Convicção / Conviction

Convicção Leitura bíblica: Daniel 3.1-23 _________________ Mas, se ele [Deus] não nos livrar, saiba, ó rei, que não prestaremos culto aos teus deuses... (Daniel 3.18) _________________

Quanto vale sua fé? Que preço você pagaria por ela? O que faria sua fé em Jesus vacilar? No dia a dia nos deparamos com situações que exigem de nós respostas que podem confirmar ou negar a nossa fé em Jesus. E nossa resposta será de acordo com a fé que temos.

É interessante que às vezes o resultado da decisão de assumir um compromisso de seguir a Deus e fazer sua vontade é totalmente inesperado. Às vezes, tudo vai bem: Deus abençoa e as portas se abrem. Mas, e quando a situação é oposta? Tomamos uma decisão ao lado de Cristo, e os problemas começam a aumentar a cada dia, em vez de diminuir. Somos tentados até a pensar que estávamos melhor sem Deus. Sadraque, Mesaque e Abedenego estavam numa situação péssima, justamente por causa da sua fé. Resolveram ficar fiéis a Deus e não adorar a estátua que o rei mandara fazer. Qual foi a recompensa por sua fé? Foram literalmente jogados no fogo. Mas espere um pouco: eles não deveriam ter sido elogiados pelos demais por causa de sua postura e pela convicção de sua fé, por fazerem o que era correto? E mesmo que ninguém os elogiasse, será que Deus não deveria livrá-los da fornalha? Afinal, estavam nessa situação por serem fiéis a ele. No entanto, os três homens não questionaram a situação. Sua fé no Deus supremo era algo inquestionável – nem que fosse necessário morrer por causa disso. Para eles, não importava o resultado, e isso fica claro na resposta dada ao rei (veja o versículo destacado).

Por isso, ao sofrer por causa da sua fé, não desanime nem desista. É a sua oportunidade de mostrar que sua fé e seu Deus são muito mais importantes para você do que seu próprio conforto e bem estar. Tenha certeza de que Deus pode reverter a situação, assim como fez na vida desses três amigos (leia o restante do capítulo), mas, mesmo que ele não o faça, a melhor opção sempre é fazer a vontade dele. A verdadeira fé não se mostra naquilo que obtemos de Deus, mas naquilo que estamos dispostos a lhe entregar sem questionamentos.

Conviction Bible reading: Daniel 3.1-23 _________________ But, if he [God] does not get rid of, know, o King, that will not worship the gods. (Daniel 3.18) _________________

How much is your faith? What price would you pay for her? What would your faith in Jesus falter? In everyday life we encounter situations that require of us answers that can confirm or deny our faith in Jesus. And our response will be in accordance with the faith that we have.

It is interesting that sometimes the result of the decision to make a commitment to follow God and do his will is totally unexpected. Sometimes, everything goes well: God blesses and the doors open. But when the situation is opposite? We made a decision to side of Christ, and the problems begin to increase every day, instead of decreasing. We are tempted to think that we were better off without God. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in a shambles, precisely because of their faith. Decided to stay faithful to God and do not worship the statue that king sent. What was the reward for their faith? Were literally thrown into the fire. But wait a minute: they shouldn't have been praised by others because of his posture and the conviction of their faith, for doing what was correct? And even though no one complimented me, I wonder if God should not rid them of the furnace? After all, they were in this situation because they are loyal to him. However, the three men have not questioned the situation. Their faith in the Supreme God was something unquestionable – even if it was necessary to die because of it. For them, no matter the result, and this becomes clear in the response given to the King (see verse highlighted).

So, to suffer because of their faith, don't be discouraged and give up. This is your chance to show your faith and your God are much more important to you than your own comfort and well-being. Make sure God can reverse the situation, just like he did in the lives of these three friends (read the rest of the chapter), but even if he didn't do it, the best option is always to do his will. The true faith is not in what we get from God, but in what we are willing to give you without question.

Trevas! / Darkness!

Trevas! Leitura bíblica: 1 João 1.5-7 _________________ Se afirmarmos que temos comunhão com ele, mas andarmos nas trevas, mentimos e não praticamos a verdade (1 João 1.6) _________________

Era domingo à tarde e eu estava com minha esposa fora de casa, em outra cidade. Alguns planos para o restante do dia: ver um jogo de futebol e depois assistir ao culto numa das igrejas próximas. Deu tudo errado: caiu um temporal e a luz apagou-se.
À medida que a escuridão da noite chegava, os planos foram desmoronando porque não enxergávamos. Não pude assistir à TV, não podia ler, não podia locomover-me: fiquei imobilizado. Nada trágico, mas bastante incômodo. Ficamos inseguros e frustrados.

O texto bíblico que você leu hoje também fala de pessoas que “andam nas trevas” – trevas espirituais pela ausência de Deus em sua vida. A maioria não se dá conta disso e nem imagina os graves prejuízos que sofre por causa dessa condição. Quem vive assim não sabe o que está acontecendo. Não pode informar-se sobre o futuro que o espera e, portanto, não pode preparar-se para enfrentar tal futuro. É uma verdadeira morte espiritual causada pela perda do contato com Deus e, como consequência, também com os outros, pois o melhor caminho entre nós e o próximo é Jesus. Assim como ficamos isolados fisicamente naquele domingo à tarde, ficam também as pessoas em sua vida espiritual, e sem perspectiva de encontrar a luz. Minha esposa e eu tínhamos certeza de que a luz voltaria, só não sabíamos quando. As pessoas sem Cristo chegam a ignorar até que a luz existe. Correm o risco de, aparecendo a luz, não a reconhecerem como luz – realmente uma carência muito grave.

É um grande privilégio ter a luz que Cristo é para a nossa vida. Naquele escuro domingo à noite ainda pude apanhar o laptop e escrever esta meditação, aguardando o retorno da luz elétrica, que nos restituiu a normalidade. Assim aguardamos hoje o momento em que Cristo se manifestar plenamente, quando todas as nossas incertezas e inseguranças também se dissolverão. (MJT)

Darkness! Bible reading: 1 John 1.5-7 _________________ If we say that we have fellowship with him, but we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth (1 John 1.6) _________________

It was Sunday afternoon and I was with my wife out of the House, in another city. A few plans for the rest of the day: view a football game and then watch the worship in one of the nearby churches. Everything went wrong: dropped a temporal and the light went out.
As the darkness of the night came, the plans were collapsing because no enxergávamos. I couldn't watch TV, couldn't read, couldn't move me: I was immobilized. Nothing tragic, but quite uncomfortable. We are insecure and frustrated.

The biblical text that you read today also speaks of people who "walk in darkness" – spiritual darkness by the absence of God in your life. Most people don't realize it and can't imagine the suffering serious harm because of this condition. Who lives like that doesn't know what's going on. Cannot inform themselves about the future that awaits him and therefore cannot prepare to face this future. Is a real spiritual death caused by loss of contact with God and, as a consequence, also with others, because the best way between us and the next is Jesus. Just as we were physically isolated that Sunday afternoon, are also people in their spiritual life, and no possibility of finding the light. My wife and I we were sure the light come back, we just didn't know when. People without Christ they ignore until the light exists. Run the risk of appearing to light, not to recognise how light – really a very serious deficiency.

It is a great privilege to have the light that Christ is our life. On that dark Sunday night could still pick up the laptop and write this meditation, awaiting the return of electric light, which we restored to normality. So we await the moment when Christ manifest fully, when all our uncertainties and insecurities will dissolve too. (MJT)

Receive from God the light of life, take it to the other and wait for the day of the full light on back of the Lord.
