Leitura Bíblica: Tiago 1.13-15

Se você fizer o bem, não será aceito? Mas se não o fizer, saiba que o pecado o ameaça à porta; ele deseja conquistá-lo, mas você deve dominá-lo (Gênesis 4.7).

O escritor Max Lucado disse: “A realidade da tentação é ainda mais certa que a morte, a fome e os impostos”. E, como bem satirizou alguém, as tentações são como gatos de rua – trate bem um deles e, antes que você pisque, ele estará de volta com uma dúzia de amigos!

Todo mundo enfrenta tentações, aquelas situações em que temos de escolher entre agradar a Deus e fazer as coisas do nosso jeito (o que a Bíblia chama de pecado). Quando Jesus estava no deserto (Mateus 4.1-11), Satanás não o estava apenas provocando. As opções que ele apresentou a Jesus eram tentações reais e fortes para ele, pois aparentemente lhe ofereciam a chance de cumprir sua missão sem ter de passar pelo martírio na cruz.

Na leitura bíblica de hoje, Tiago afirma que a tentação não vem de Deus, mas dos nossos próprios desejos maus. São eles que nos atraem e nos enganam. No versículo em destaque, Deus adverte Caim, invejoso de seu irmão Abel (e sentindo-se tentado a resolver isso com as próprias mãos), que ele é que deveria controlar seus desejos em vez de se deixar controlar por eles.

Por definição, resistir à tentação nunca será fácil. É preciso sempre estar atento e pedir socorro a quem tem poder para nos ajudar. Não estamos sozinhos nessa luta. Hebreus 2.18 diz: “Tendo em vista o que [Jesus] mesmo sofreu quando tentado, ele é capaz de socorrer aqueles que também estão sendo tentados”. Por isso, olhe para Jesus em vez de se deixar distrair pela tentação. Não a trate como algo inocente, como um gatinho abandonado que precisa de carinho. Cuidado! Afaste-se dela quantas vezes for necessário. E saiba que, mesmo que em algum momento você acabe cedendo, isso não será motivo para desânimo, pois o Senhor está sempre pronto a ajudar você a se levantar de novo.

The writer Max Lucado said: "the reality of temptation is even more certain than death and taxes". And, as someone has quipped, the temptations are like stray cats-take good care of them and, before you blink, he will be back with a dozen friends.

Everyone faces temptation, those situations where we have to choose between pleasing God and do things our way (what the Bible calls Sin). When Jesus was in the desert (Matthew 4.1-11), Satan wasn't just teasing. The options he presented to Jesus were real and strong temptations for him, because apparently you offered the chance to fulfill your mission without having to go through the martyrdom on the cross.

In today's scriptural reading, James says that temptation does not come from God, but of our own evil desires. They attract us and deceive us. In the verse, God warns Cain, jealous of your brother Abel (and feeling tempted to work it out with his bare hands), that he should control his desires rather than letting control for them.

By definition, resist the temptation will never be easy. We must always be alert and call for help to those who have the power to help us. We are not alone in this fight. Hebrews 2.18 says: "in order that [Jesus] even suffered when tempted, he is able to succor those who are also being tried. For that, look to Jesus rather than let distract by temptation. Don't treat it as something innocent, like a kitten that needs care. Watch out! Get away from her as many times as needed. And know that, even if at some point you end up giving in, that shouldn't be a reason for discouragement, because the Lord is always ready to help you get up again.
