João e Beatriz precisavam de ajuda. Eles já tinham
situações terríveis como a de João ter sido baleado por rebeldes em sua terra
natal Libéria (ele quase morreu), anos em campos de refugiados infestados
por doenças, e a morte de três de seus filhos devido aos combates na região.
Bruce Beakley, empresário cristão, retornava aos Estados Unidos, após ter sofrido uma cirurgia de substituição do quadril na Bélgica, quando conheceu o casal João e Beatriz no aeroporto. Movido pela situação deles, Bruce se tornou seu defensor - ajudando-os a se estabelecerem nos EUA e depois a se reunirem aos dois filhos que tinham sido detidos na Guiné Equatorial por três anos.
Bruce exemplificou o conselho de Paulo aos Filipenses: "Não tenha cada um em vista o que é propriamente seu, senão também cada qual o que é dos outros" (2:4).
O apóstolo não estava lidando apenas com um casal aflito, mas com uma congregação enfrentando a perseguição (1:27-30).
Mas muito semelhante ao exemplo de Bruce, Paulo instruiu seus irmãos cristãos a seguir o exemplo do Salvador e servir uns aos outros.
O exemplo do Salvador como servo humilde é maravilhosamente apresentado no antigo hino encontrado no livro de Filipenses 2:6-11.
Viver de maneira que agrade a Jesus exige quatro atitudes:
- Unidade em Jesus: ”... participam do Espírito de Deus...” (Filipenses 2:1).
- Compartilhar de Seu amor: “... viverem em harmonia...” (v.2).
- Corações humildes: “... considerem os outros superiores a vocês mesmos” (v.3)
- Servindo os outros:” Que ninguém procure somente os seus próprios interesses, mas também os dos outros” (v.4).
Bruce Beakley poderia ter ouvido educadamente a história do casal e depois ter retornado aos seus negócios como de costume. Em vez disso, escolheu ser humilde e expandir o amor de Deus (vv.2-3). Ele serviu. De que maneira você irá considerar os interesses dos outros hoje? Como você irá servir ? (Tom Felten)

John and Beatrice needed help. They had terrible situations like that of

refugee camps which are contaminated by disease, and the death of three of
their children due to the fighting in the region.
Bruce Beakley, Christian businessman, returned to the United States, after having undergone a hip replacement surgery in Belgium when he met the couple John and Beatrice at the airport. Moved by the plight of them, Bruce became his advocate-helping them to settle in the US and then to meet the two children who had been detained in Equatorial Guinea for three years.
Bruce exemplified the Council of Paul to the Philippians: "not every one in sight of what is proper, but also every which what is of another" (2: 4).
The Apostle was not dealing just with a couple stricken, but with a congregation facing persecution (1:27 -30).
But very similar to example of Bruce, Paul instructed his brothers the Christians follow the example of the Savior and serve each other.
The example of the Savior as a humble servant is beautifully presented in the old hymn found in the book of Philippians 2: 6-11.
Live in a manner acceptable to Jesus requires four steps:
-In Jesus: "... participate in the spirit of God ..." (Philippians 2: 1).
-Share your love: "... live in harmony ..." (v. 2).
-Humble Hearts: "... consider others above yourselves" (v. 3)
-Serving the other: "Let no one seek only their own interests, but also those of others" (v. 4).
