Luz do mundo

Jesus
disse: “Eu sou a luz do mundo. Quem me segue nunca andará em trevas, mas terá a
luz da vida” (João 8.12).

Na leitura bíblica, Isaías
convida o povo de Deus – os israelitas – a brilhar, iluminando tudo à sua volta
a partir da glória do Senhor que raiava sobre eles. Em outro trecho, anuncia a
chegada de uma luz que acabaria para sempre com a escuridão: “O povo que
caminhava em trevas viu uma grande luz; sobre os que viviam na terra da sombra
da morte raiou uma luz” (Isaías 9.2). O Novo Testamento mostra que Jesus era o
cumprimento dessa profecia (Mateus 4.15-16). Mais tarde, o próprio Senhor
confirma isso ao dizer as palavras do versículo em destaque.
Por outro lado, no Sermão
do Monte Jesus dirige-se aos seus seguidores com uma afirmação semelhante à de
Isaías: “Vocês são a luz do mundo… Assim brilhe a luz de vocês diante dos
homens…” (Mateus 5.14a, 16a). Deixa claro que espera que sejam luz e brilhem de
forma a iluminar as trevas. Isso aconteceria quando Jesus fosse visto nas
atitudes e ações de cada pessoa que crê nele.
Afinal, quem é então a luz
do mundo? Jesus Cristo ou o seu povo? Há uma ilustração que explica isso: o sol
tem luz própria e, ao se levantar de manhã, expulsa a escuridão da noite. A lua
faz algo semelhante, ainda que com menos intensidade: sua luz é suficiente
para, por exemplo, mostrar o caminho à noite. No entanto, há uma diferença
crucial entre sol e lua: a segunda não tem luz própria, apenas reflete o sol
que, naquela hora, está oculto para quem vê a lua.
É isso que acontece com
Deus e seu povo. Deus é a verdadeira luz, que traz vida e calor. A luz dos
seguidores de Jesus não tem todas as qualidades nem a mesma força da luz de
Cristo, mas ainda assim cumpre sua função quando brilha de forma desimpedida,
como – para usar outro exemplo de Jesus (em Mateus 5.15) – uma lâmpada em lugar
alto e apropriado para iluminar a sala inteira e todos os que estão nela.

Light of the world

light of the world. Who follows me will never walk in darkness, but shall have
the light of life "(John 8.12).

In reading the Bible, Isaiah invites the people of
God-Israelites-shining, illuminating everything in your back from the glory of
the Lord that bordered on them. In another excerpt, announces the arrival of a
light that would end forever with the darkness, "the people that walked in
darkness have seen a great light; about those who lived in the land of the
shadow of death a light dawned "(Isaiah 9.2). The New Testament shows that
Jesus was the fulfillment of this prophecy (Matthew 4.15-16). Later, the Lord himself
confirms this by saying the words of the verse highlighted.
On the other hand, in the sermon on the mount Jesus directs his
followers with a statement similar to that of Isaiah: "You are the light
of the world ... So you light shine before men ... " (Matthew 5.14 a,
16a). Makes it clear that expected to be light and shine in order to illuminate
the darkness. This would happen when Jesus was seen in the attitudes and
actions of each person who believes in him.
After all, who is then the light of the world? Jesus Christ or your
people? There is an illustration which explains that: the Sun has its own
light, to get up in the morning, banished the darkness of the night. The moon
does something similar, although with less intensity: your light is enough to,
for example, show the way at night. However, there is a crucial difference
between Sun and Moon: the second has no light of its own, only reflects the Sun
which, at the time, is hidden to those who see the moon.
That's what happens with God and your people. God is the true light,
which brings life and heat. The light of Jesus ' followers do not have all the
qualities or the same strength of the light of Christ, but still meets your
function when shines so clear, as-to use another example of Jesus (Matthew
5.15) - a lamp in high place and suitable to illuminate the entire room and all
that are in it.

The brightness that Jesus
expects his followers comes from their obedience to his teachings.
