O texto de
hoje se refere a Israel. Aquele povo foi conduzido por Deus durante décadas em
sua peregrinação pelo deserto. Os israelitas foram libertos da escravidão do
Egito de um modo extraordinário, presenciaram milagres diariamente (como o
maná, alimento dado por Deus, e a nuvem ou coluna de fogo que os guiava) e
também a punição divina quando ocorriam rebeliões. Receberam leis especiais,
cujo cumprimento os tornaria também especiais. Este era o objetivo de Deus:
formar um povo santo, diferente dos outros povos. Estes perceberiam que a
obediência às leis divinas tornava os israelitas sábios. Mandamentos tão justos
e bons mostravam que Deus estava próximo e se importa com seus filhos. Ele é
bem diferente dos deuses criados pelos homens, que são cruéis e distantes, e
têm um relacionamento de troca com seus adoradores (“toma lá, dá cá”). Os
pagãos poderiam comparar a ação de Deus com sua crença em ídolos e perguntar:
“Que Deus é este?” Não havia – nem há – outro como ele.
Quando
entregamos nossa vida a Jesus, ela muda. Não apenas porque deixamos de praticar
aquilo que lhe desagrada e buscamos obedecer-lhe, mas nossa forma de pensar
também é transformada. Todos percebem que não somos mais a mesma pessoa. É
natural que seja assim: nossa “velha natureza” não condiz mais com a fé que
professamos.
Enquanto isso,
o mundo nos observa. A obediência a Deus nos distingue daqueles que não o
conhecem. Temos uma razão para agir como agimos – a orientação bíblica, sempre
nossa melhor opção (mesmo que geralmente segui-la resulte em sofrimento). Que a
nossa vida com Deus sirva de exemplo para os outros: para quem vive sem Deus,
que desperte o desejo de conhecê-lo; para os outros cristãos, que sirva como
encorajamento. Enfim, que nossa dedicação a Deus faça a luz de Cristo brilhar
(Mateus 5.16) e alcance quem está em trevas!

The
text today refers to Israel. That people was conducted by God for decades in
his pilgrimage through the desert. The Israelites were freed from the bondage
of Egypt in a way that is extraordinary, witnessed miracles daily (as manna, food
given by God, and the cloud or pillar of fire that was driving) and also the
divine punishment when rebellions occurred. Received special laws, which would
make them special too. This was the purpose of God: form a holy people,
different from other people. These would realize that obedience to the laws of
God made the Israelites. Commandments so fair and good showed that God was
close to and care about their children. It is quite different from the gods
created by men, who are cruel and distant, and have a trading relationship with
his worshippers ("tat"). The pagans could compare the action of God
with his belief in idols and asking: "Who is this God?" There was no
– no – another like him.
When
we commit our lives to Jesus, it changes. Not just because we practice what you
dislike and seek to obey him, but our way of thinking is also transformed. All
realize that we're not the same person. It is natural that way: our old nature
"does not match with the faith that we profess.
Meanwhile,
the whole world is watching. Obedience to God makes us different from those who
do not know him. We have a reason to act the way we do-the biblical guidance,
always our best option (even if they usually follow it results in suffering).
Our life with God sets a good example for others who live without God, that
awaken the desire to meet you; for other Christians, which serve as
encouragement. Anyway, our dedication to God do the light of Christ shine
(Matthew 5.16) and reach those in darkness!
